Artist/Designer Statement

Through understanding the mechanics of my car, I explore the relationship between driving and drawing as it relates to recording the history of a drive.

Attached to the frame of the car, and inline with and perpendicular to the axle, a spring-loaded, stylus-like instrument maintains constant pressure against the left front wheel of the car. This accounts for the direction of the front wheel’s rotational axis relative to the body of the car. Cut from acrylic, a circular blank is inserted to fit within the outer rim of the car’s wheel. By scratching into the piece of acrylic, the stylus records the deviations from a true planar surface, the road, which affects vehicle suspension and deflection.

The history of the drive is played back on a record player.
