Born in Beijing, China. Luyao Chen studied at Le Arti Orafe Jewellery School & Academy in Florence, Italy. Following graduation, she continued her education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received an MFA in Jewelry/Metal.
Luyao’s works are focused on the materials themselves and their “soul”. She believes that each material has its unique properties, physicality, connotations, and even personality. Luyao is also interested in the theory of new materialism, where the agency and effects of non-human objects are explored.
