Artist/Designer Statement

My work thus far has had several recurring ideologies; use of narrative, popular culture, personal experience, referencing film, and utilizing aspects of commercial photography.

I recently came to a point where still photographs could no longer contain my ideas as an artist. The next logical step was filmmaking; I found I was able to explore my ideas freely, and without the previous restraints of the still image. Now able to use camera movement, sound, acting, and all of the other aspects of filmmaking, I can express my thoughts and ideas with a more fulfilling result.

From a working standpoint, I have spent the better part of a year making a 20-minute short film called, “A Smile and a Handshake”. I wrote the script, produced it myself, directed and edited the film, and was the cinematographer as well. All I will say about the film is it prods from a distance at the idea of the 1940’s 50’s era American traveling salesman.

What I have to say through my work should be understood without me having to spoon-feed it through verbal explanation. As an artist, if ones work needs further explanation than what is presented, then either the artist did not do their job, or the viewer has a problem. Film as an art form or any art in general should be left with a certain amount of viewer interpretation this makes for brain stimulation. I try to treat my viewers with the expectation that they are intelligent enough to draw certain conclusions for themselves. However, the artist should have a clear and concrete understanding of what they are trying to do. Giving people questions is much more fun than giving them answers, if you want answers look in a science book.
